2017, Sept 9th – Sept 16th

Workshop Description:

Painting primarily from your photos poses unique opportunities and challenges. Join us in beautiful Istria Croatia for a vacation exploration of how to make the most of your image and inspiration gathering to get to your desired result – a gorgeous pastel painting that communicates your vision. While enjoying the pleasures of Hotel Villa Gloria and photographing and sketching throughout the area, you will learn ways to maximize the benefits and avoid the pitfalls of this working process. Ms. Smith will provide working examples and demonstrations to inspire our field work and will offer lots of individualized pastel painting instruction, Emphasis will be placed on ways the pastel medium encourages creative development of your imagery. We’ll share loads of tips and advice to kick-start your personal progress. And don’t forget Venice is only a couple of hours by ferry boat away as well!

About the Artist:

Colette Odya Smith’s paintings have been described as a beautiful fusion of realism and abstraction, demonstrating a composition almost choreographic in its fluid grace, a magnetic color design, aesthetic harmony, and a suffusion of energetic peace. Her imagery has equal parts earthiness and mystery, suggestive of a transcendent, perhaps spiritual presence. These are not accidental effects as Ms. Smith works consciously to give physical form to the intangible and to create works of art that are of service. In her nearly 25-year love affair with pastels, Colette has exhibited widely in the US and also in France, Germany and as one of the artists representing IAPS at the 2nd Biennial International Pastel Exhibition in Suzhou, China. She has won numerous awards and recognitions including Master Pastellist of le Societe des Pastellists de France, Masters Circle Member (IAPS) International Association of Pastel Societies, Signature Member (PSA) Pastel Society of America, and Distinguished Pastelist (PSNM) Pastel Society of New Mexico. Her awards include placing multiple times in The Artist’s Magazine competitions, and in The Pastel Journal “Pastel 100”. She has served as the judge and juror for a variety of groups and venues including The Pastel Journal, IAPS, PSNM, the Pastel Artists of Canada.
She is a contributor to the book “Painting Sunlight and Shadows with Pastels” by Maggie Price and has had her work featured in The Pastel Journal, American Artist, and Pratique des Arts magazines. She teaches workshops for artist groups, the Peninsula Art School in Fish Creek, WI and also at the IAPS convention in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
