Gail Sibley, Sept 2017

posted in: Upcoming Workshops | 0

2017, Sept 2nd – 9th

Gail Sibley delights in the experience and struggle of painting from life, whether painting landscapes or urbanscapes ‘en plein air,’ or working from a still life or figure in her studio. She also loves creating work that relies more on an inner voice and the process itself. She says, “Over the years, I’ve learnt to trust that the combination of intuition and intellect, of following the lead of the painting, will get me there in the end. I’ve also learnt the value of taking more risks.” Gail loves to teach. She offers workshops with a focus on creating strong and pleasing paintings using a limited palette. She gives a lot of attention to values and how understanding them can lead to freedom with colour. She also assists participants to find ways to allow their unique and special creative voice to blossom without being stunted by negative judgement.

Gail considers herself lucky, both to be born to artistic parents who encouraged her direction into the arts, and to be born and brought up in Jamaica, a land of beauty and complexity, of warmth and coolness, of vibrancy and tension. Many say that her Caribbean upbringing influenced her colourful palette. Certainly it shaped her worldview. She now lives in Victoria, on the west coast of Canada.

After completing a BFA (Hons) at the University of Manitoba, Canada, Gail received her MA in Art History at Queen’s University. Rather than work toward a PhD in art history, she was drawn back to the practice of painting and has never regretted that decision. She achieved her signature status with the Pastel Society of America (PSA) in 2002. She is also a member of Pastel Artists Canada. Gail participates in national and international juried shows and has won various awards including the 2014 Grand Prize for Painting On The Edge (POTE), an annual international juried exhibition at the Federation Gallery in Vancouver. Her work is in private and corporate collections in several countries. In the last couple of years, she’s been asked to jury shows and finds this a rewarding task.

Gail is developing a series of online courses in pastel and as they are completed, will be available on her website, www.howtopastel.com. Currently, there is one available on pastel painting on location.

If you love using pastels, you will definitely love Gail’s blog.
